Choir in summer concert

Spirit of Lindow - special anniversary year commission

  • To celebrate our 50th anniversary year the choir asked composer Sasha Johnson Manning, who wrote the Manchester Carols, to write music specially for us. We also asked members and friends to write poems about the choir and about the local area. These were presented to Sasha, who composed music around the words.

The poems include a poem about Lindow Moss by choir member Nigel Stones. Professor John Handley provided a middle English poem and poet John Shields has written poems about the Bollin valley and Alderley Edge.

The choir also searched for poetry that gave some of the essence of singing together. We were very pleased to include a poem by Walter de la Mare and one by Elizabeth Jennings about music, as well as a lovely medieval piece translated into modern English. As a Wilmslow choir, singing in the area for 50 years, this piece is about what and where we are. It is Wilmslow to music.

Sasha and Nigel Sasha at a Lindow Singers rehearsal

The choir was very pleased to welcome Sasha, the composer of 'The Spirit of Lindow', to a rehearsal. Also in the photo are our accompanist, Richard Brocklehurst, our conductor, Russell Medley, and Nigel Stones, a choir member and author of one of the poems that Sasha set to music.

  • March concert - The Creation

Our musical director, Russell Medley, also directs Sale Choral Society and they joined us in March to sing Haydn's Creation. The choirs were accompanied by an orchestra with Richard Brocklehurst as continuo and featured soloists from the Royal Northern College of Music.

  • Anniversary concert, June

As a final special event of the anniversary year our June concert included music from the choir's repertoire over the past 50 years, chosen by Roy Vickery, a founder member of the Lindow Singers. The concert included well known songs and choral works as well as excerpts from the Faure Requiem. We also sang again the Spirit of Lindow, first performed in the autumn. Strawberries and cream and a glass of wine were provided.
